The Starbucks Former CEO Howard Schultz is openly considering a run for President in 2020 as an independent. Howard Schultz appeared on 60 minutes where he made this announcement. This is a shock considering Howard Schultz was expected to run as a Democrat in 2020 since he is a left leaning individual, but it seems the Democrat party has even moved too far left for him.
Howard Schultz stated on 60 minutes, “. I will run as a centrist independent, outside of the two-party system we’re living at a most-fragile time not only the fact that this president is not qualified to be the president, but the fact that both parties are consistently not doing what’s necessary on behalf of the American people and are engaged, every single day, in revenge politics.”
Host Scott Pelley asked, “Why run as an Independent? Your views have always aligned with the Democratic Party.”
Howard Schultz replied, “That’s true. I’ve, you know, I’ve been a lifelong Democrat. I look at both parties– we see extremes on both sides well, we are sitting, today, with approximately $21.5 trillion of debt, which is a reckless example, not only of Republicans, but of Democrats, as well, as a reckless failure of their constitutional responsibility.”
Scott Pelley questioned, “Do you worry that you’re going to siphon votes away from the Democrats and, thereby, ensure that President Trump has a second term?”
Howard Schultz answered, “I wanna see the American people win. I wanna see America win. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Republican. Bring me your ideas. And I will be an independent person, who will embrace those ideas. Because I am not, in any way, in bed with a party.”
Democrats are not happy with the announcement of Howard Schultz because he will only steal votes away from the centrist Democrats who oppose the far left Democrats. This would likely give President Trump an easy win for his 2020 re-election.
Democrat 2020 candidate Julian Castro replied to CNN, “I have a concern that if he did run, that essentially, it would provide [President] Donald Trump with his best hope of getting re-elected. I would suggest to Mr. Schultz to truly think about the negative impact that that might make.”
