President Trump made a huge move towards embracing Israel’s sovereignty on Thursday. Trump announced the United States fully recognized Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights.

Trump stated, “After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded, “At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you President Trump! @realDonaldTrump

Why is this an important move for the United States and Israel? Many terrorists like Hezbollah are looking for any advantage they can get in order to destroy Israel. The Golan Heights are a safety net for the Israeli people to keep a safe guard against the terrorist organizations.

Fox News reported, “Since at least 2015, both Iranian military operatives and Hezbollah have attempted to set up forward military outposts to threaten and attack Israel from the Syrian side of the Golan. Additionally, the murderous Assad regime is obviously not a responsible world player, and it remains a security interest of Israel to keep the Golan Heights which provides a critical vantage point over northern Israel.”

The Daily Wire wrote,

“The highly mountainous Golan Heights region, which borders war-torn Syria, is militarily strategic for Israel — allowing it to fall back into Arab hands would allow foreign armies to easily target large swaths of central Israel’s population centers. Israel acquired the Golan Heights as part of the existential Six Day War of 1967, during which Israel was forced to defend itself against revanchist Arab armies that invaded and sought to annihilate the fledgling Zionist state from all sides. Israel formally annexed the Golan Heights in 1981. As The Daily Wire reportedlast week, citing Axios, the U.S. State Department — long a parochial bastion of pro-Arab, anti-Israel bias — for the first time formally referred to the Golan Heights not as “occupied territory,” but instead as “under Israeli control”:”

The U.S. refers to the Golan Heights as an area “under Israeli control,” instead of “occupied territory,” for the first time in a human rights report issued today by the State Department. …

This step is both symbolic and significant. Israel occupied the Golan Heights, recognized internationally as Syrian territory, during the 1967 war. In the last year, Israel has been lobbying the Trump administration and Congress to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the area. The change in language in the report is not a recognition of Israeli sovereignty, but is a clear signal in that direction.
